About Unity Friends Meeting
Unity Friends Meeting is a Quaker meeting within the Religious Society of Friends. Unity nurtures a Pan-African expression of waiting worship, marked by libations, quiet listening and faithful response to the leadings of the Spirit.
Our Unity Friends Meeting carries an interwoven history.
The Unity meeting house itself is the oldest Quaker meeting house in Philadelphia, bearing connections to the Underground Railroad, the Civil Rights Movement, and many other moments of collective struggle, service, progress, and healing.
In this generation, Unity has also been renewed through a merger with the Ujima Friends Peace Center, a non-profit organization that centers Pan-African waiting worship and has helped shape the spiritual and communal life of the city in meaningful ways.
Together, these histories reflect one living Quaker tradition—rooted in waiting worship and expressed through Pan-African culture. What has been carried here across generations is a shared spiritual practice, continually deepened by community service and the possibilities that emerge when people listen faithfully to the Spirit together.
